well i'm not in oz anymore, in bali. last sad fairwell on thursday. its hot and humid here and these guys'd rip you off as soon as they'd say hello - but the sunsets are truly beautiful and you can buy all sorts of cheap crap so i'm not complaining.

hi, not much to say other than i'm hung over - drank too much last night. headed up the coast with wes on monday with everything i own in the back of the car. as there were two of us driving we got to byron bay by 11:00pm. camped for a few days, broke the end of my board AGAIN! at watgos beach on the rocks. strong current swept us both onto the rocks.
over a few beers we decided i'd continue up the coast and wes would head home with my car and board. he dropped me off here at surfers paradise, where i've been for the last two days. heavy night on the town last night, surfers paradise is cool - i love it. baught a plane ticket to cairns today. jumped the Nevis Highwire bungy jump at queenstown, new zealand today. if you've never been there its a pod suspended over a gorge, 143 meters above the nevis river. its the highest bungy jump in austrilazia. you get to the pod in this open air grill bottomed basket along the wire and the wait your turn standing in this glass bottomed metal pod shitting bricks. it was THE most terrifying experience of my entire life - i've never done a sky dive but i'm told that this is worse. when you are called you sit in this black chair and are strapped to the cord. you then stand on the edge, on this ledge and on the count of three you're expected to throw yourself off. holy mother of god, the rush you get is unbelievable, and the feeling of piece for the rest of the day was amazing. i don't care that they tell you its totally safe - its the most amazing experience and has got to be on the list for one of the 500 things you've got to do before you die.

well headed up to Kaikoura on the east coast on thursday evening then got up at 5:00am the next day to go swimming with a group of about 300 dolphins - beautiful. drove down to christchurch then on to Timaru in the hope of finding somewhere to stay, everywhere was full so had to sleep in the car. anyhow headed up to lake Tekapo this morning, and i guess yea you'd have to call it...beautiful. hope to get to queenstown tonight, but maybe i'll stop off at mount cook, too many places to go and not enough time - too bad hey.

got up early this morning, at the ‘crack ‘a dawn’ (05:30am mind) to get up to soldiers beach and have a calm day break morning surf, the water usually being ‘glassy’ that time of day, driving past the local beach not so much as a ripple to be seen, just a warm red sun rising over a misty sea, beautiful in fact. Anyhow on we drove to soldiers – can be quite good I’m told – and there we saw some decent swell. We picked our spot and paddled out. jim, being a fast paddler, and a lucky bastard at that, quickly cut his way through the breakers sliding through a calm point between to colliding waves and sat on his board beyond the white water - waiting for his moment. Just behind him, and with my timing all wrong, the two same waves joined together and swept me straight back to the shore. And could I get out again? Could I hell. Tried another four times each time sent straight back to shore and almost drowned in the process. So I sat and watched.
Anyhow we decided to try somewhere up the coast and found a calm sandy beach, glassy water and some good peeling waves. Felt like I was filming ‘endless summer’. Headed home had a pie and headed for steph and caths house, on the beach. Caught a few more waves and then bang – broke my board! Holy mother @&%$$, not even big waves just a few dumpers but I think the board had maybe had it's nose dug into the sand one too many times. just too bad Sunday, March 17, 2002

copied form note book:
'summer is coming, I'm in manley. I have the day off today and its Thursday. Came up last night from the coast. Slept In the flat then got up around 8:30 for a surf.had set my alarm for 6:00 but I'm not an early riser. Waves were small but perfect to practice on - practice getting up in one go. I've developed a bad habbit of kneeling before I stand which wastes time and is generally a bad idea. Standing up quick today - making progress.' Sunday, September 23, 2001
i'm at work, the sun is shining and i've got nothing to do. i'm not booked to see anyone today, just have to make sure i look busy enough to stop anyone finding me something to do.

It's a small world after all for the American media
An interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald, for americans it seems the only news worth knowing about is what happens in america, it unsettles me that a country that is so intent on dumping its culture onto everyone all around the globe, has so little interest in what it is destroying in the process Thursday, July 05, 2001
i've a few days off so i'm taking it easy, played tenis this morning then surfed the afternoon away, the waves down on our nearest beach were just about perfect. recorded the sound of the waves and birds as the sun set and the full moon rose, a small clip here
